Connections
I spent most of the morning on Facebook instead of working on the first draft of my essay which is due Thursday. So, no, if anyone was still feeling doubtful about this (like myself), I am so not ready yet to be around the internet full-time. I’m hoping I’ll be able to crank out 2000+ words Thursday morning when I’m back in Maastricht – offline and short on time. That’s when I do my best work. It’s true.
I’m never much on Facebook. I never do any of the tests or the games, I don’t even know what they are except for whatever I see on other people’s profile. I only set up my profile in the first place to keep in contact with all my beloved peeps from the Bluegrass State and anyone I met there who lives somewhere else on the globe.
I wrote Linn from Norway about my hopefully coming to Sweden soon, and wouldn’t that be the perfect opportunity to finally meet again, seeing as Sweden – if nothing else – is at least closer to Norway than Germany or the Netherlands? I’m excited to hear back from her because she lives in Oslo or close to Oslo – I forget, and it changes all the time – and I would love to check out Oslo with her. And you know, regardless, I just need to SEE HER AGAIN. I hate being apart from people I love but then, I’ve always felt I’ve loved people more the more difficult it was to actually see them. I’m messed up that way.
I checked out my friend Mylinda’s new pictures of their bar. See, she and her husband and two boys are neighbors of my host family in Kentucky, and they’re seriously the best people ever. They added so much to my American experience, and to that of the other exchange students in the neighborhood (Linn from Norway, and Viktoria from Germany, and Dora from Taiwan). They’re like family to me. Of course, truth be told, I would likely call anyone my family that’s been through some of my worst alcohol experiments with me. Which is where their bar comes in. They turned their two-car garage into the coolest cowboy slash Harley Davidson slash old Western saloon slash neighborly bar every. There’s, like, pictures of hot women and of motorcycles and James Dean posters and guitars and flat screen TVs and bar stools from Amsterdam and Popsicles for the kids. AND THE KINDEST PEOPLE YOU’LL EVER MEET. I spent many, many weekends there, just hanging out. (Which is why I barely made any friends at high school, by the way, but that’s another story for another day.) When I was there, they had only completed about half of the garage space (the main bar and fridge etc.) but now the whole thing’s done, and it looks so cool.
Also, I found that my host mom Andrea has finally joined Facebook! It’s so hilarious because she is just lost when it comes to computers and the internet – which is so amazing to me because she’s so young and active and I just always figure that anyone knows a thing or two about being online. She doesn’t, though. Or didn’t? She’s on Facebook now. I’m hoping I might be able to stay in touch a little better if she ends up updating there regularly. — I was just going to type that their two girls aren’t on Facebook because their dad would never let them at their age and so I can’t keep in touch that way either but GUESS WHAT. Regan is on Facebook! WHAT. She’s, like, six. In my memory. In reality, she’ll be FOURTEEN this year. That freaks me out.
Flights to Lexington Blue Grass or Cincinnati are at only 612 euros ($875) right now which is really low compared to what I paid in 2007.
Man. The KY yearnin’ is coming back.
No no no no no. NO.
