I love you, and I think I may just like iTunes

by Katharina

I want to step on the proverbial (?) soapbox for this special moment: Ladies and… and I should probably add gentlemen to the mix here but so far men have been 100% absent from this blog – as they are from my life but that’s a different issue. Ladies, thank you so much for all the comments! You see, it is absolutely gorgeous outside with the sparkling snow and the blue sky and the surprisingly warm sun and I was home from uni at 3.30 which is amazing, and I thought to myself: self, what could possibly make this amazing day any better? And voilĂ , six comments on a SNOW POST of all things! How perfect is that? When I first saw that 6 I naturally assumed at least half of it were spam comments reminding me of my urgent need to INCREASE MY PENIS SIZE. But anyhow.

All of you wonderful human beings aside (And moment’s over.), my host mom Andrea is my second favorite person in the world. But only because my host dad Steve is my first favorite person in the world. They’s just good people, y’know what I’m sayin’. (I watched Gone with the Wind two nights ago and I am very much linguistically influenceable, if you must know.)

For Christmas, they did not only send me an adorable card with the girls and the dogs on it. They didn’t only send me that card and the Taylor Swift debut album (which granted, I already downloaded from, er, somewhere online but still). They did not only send me a card, the Taylor Swift album and the first of the Twilight books (which, oh it’s so sad, I have of course already read but can you believe how well these people know me and how thoughtful they are?).

They send me a card, the Taylor Swift album, the Twilight book and a gift card to the US iTunes store.

Alright, hold up a sec. Appreciate the obscenity that is that many gifts for just one tiny not-so-tiny girl. Breathe out.

They’re insane, is what they are – sending me that many gifts, that I actually love.

The only thing is, I hate iTunes. Or I hated it, I should say. I hate to have it on my laptop because it slows everything down and I find the software itself extremely complicated. Or found, I should say. I have installed iTunes on my old Sony Vaio at least four times, only to uninstall it again.

So now I had to install it to use my gift card and my friend Julia kept telling me just how great a program it was and that, no, dumbass, it’s not difficult to use at all.

To make a long story short, I spent two days importing all my music into the iTunes music library and re-naming files and adding correct covers and, trust me, once I start something like this I need for it to be absolutely perfect. With the covers added and all music labeled correctly, the whole thing didn’t actually look as confusing. Also, on my new laptop the thing doesn’t seem to slow down all other programs running as much as on the Vaio.

And then – well, don’t even get me started on the iTunes store. Is anyone as thrilled by the endless possibilities? It’s been a bit bittersweet to spend money on digital music that you could just as well get illegally at a million other sources without anybody ever finding out – one minute you’re thinking what a freaking idiot you are and the next minute you feel all noble and civil. This American iTunes gift card of course is my key to the wonderful kingdom that is US television shows which are not available at the German iTunes store. Oh, such a perfect perfect Christmas gift!

First songs I bought:

Should I stay or should I go by The Clash
Don’t explain by Billie Holiday
In my secret life by Leonard Cohen
Spiralling by Keane
American boy by Estelle and Kanye West
Phenomena by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Big river by The Highwaymen

Please don’t ask. They’re all amazing songs. (Although the last one is much better live. Boo. Talking about live shows: Keith Urban is coming to LOOAVULL on his 2009 tour and I cannot be there. My life is nothing but constant failure. Boohoo.)

Other wonderful things that happened today:

Sandra bought me coffee at Coffeelovers. She was all like, you always make copies for me and stuff. I have maybe copied something for her once. She’s a doll.

I found a great new tea. It’s raspberry/rose hip. And it smells like the red home-made Jell-O, only less nauseating but awful pretty. Good grief, if that’s not the least news-worthy comment you’ve ever heard, then you may as well crawl into bed forever.

Uni was everything but spectacular today, and I don’t have the book I need to finish the assignment for Friday which is the first assignment in this course and the first time I meet everyone else in the group and the tutor, so – . Seriously, my life. is a constant. failure. Sheesh.

Off to watch more Simpsons and Jon Stewart. The only lights of hope in my otherwise dreadful existence.

I kid of course. Maybe not.

Same day, different year
