To kill a mockingbird

October 15, 2008 Books, Shopping Comments (2)

I love buying books, and I am the ashamed owner of a bookshelf filled with yet to be read books that I once thought were amazing but then never got around to actually reading. Today I bought To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee and I figure if this is not a book I’ll dive into right away, then I’m a lost cause anyway.

This book, of course, is one that everybody has at least heard of once before - although I’m not sure whether it is actually that famous in Germany. We didn’t even mention this in my high school English class and it hasn’t been until recently half a year ago that I became interested in reading classics outside of academic schedules. To kill a mockingbird is a Pulitzer Price winner (always a good sign), it’s been sold over 30 million times (wait. WHAT.) and apparently a handful of critics ranked its importance as higher than reading the Bible. Which, duh, why would I read the Bible? (Which is a whole different issue, and any sane person won’t get into arguing about it.)

My favorite short quote from the novel already: Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.

I found this particular edition of the book especially pretty (although as I have come to understand, there have been other maybe even prettier ones) and so I just went for it. I pick my book purchases by whether I can deal with the cover design; it’s sad and it screams stupidity but THAT’S HOW I ROLL. Blame Helga.

This may be one of the entries with the most cross-references to past entries which, I guess, means that I’m out of things to say. I gotta get to finish some reading for uni and clean up this place, anyway.

MAJOR CHRISTMAS DECORATION POST COMING UP LATER TODAY.

  1. It is OCTOBER, why are you decorating for Christmas? I guess the blog will explain…

I’ve only read To Kill a Mockingbird once, and I really, really liked it, but other people SWEAR this is their FAVOURITE BOOK. So I need to go back and reread it to see if I luuuurrve it that much myself.

  2. I have way too many books waiting to be read too. Like 50ish, and my sister keeps buying books, so I told her that she needs to read some of these before bringing more into the house :)
