thelmalouise

A friend recommended Thelma & Louise to me last week and promptly brought the DVD with her and lend it to me. My weekend full of nothing to do at all had been shanghaied by my best friend who decided to stop by for a quick talk and we ended up meeting our friend V who’s birthday it was, anyway, and so it was kinda nice to see her. She was also the one who brought this movie into my life.

And Good Lord, am I ever thankful that she did. Thelma & Louise is the perfect movie. Well, actually, I can’t come up with a specific reason why I liked it so much. There’s a bit of everything – drama, action, love, sex, friendship, crime. Combined with the back story of a typical chic flick road movie, that usually makes a movie brutally boring but in Thelma & Louise it’s working. The soundtrack has an enticing edge to it (it’s Hans Zimmer, after all, how could it be anything short of perfect? and by the way, is Hans Zimmer the only soundtrack writer out there? he’s in every movie!) but the music is not perfect or mind-blowingly unique. I do love Part of me, part of you by Glenn Frey, though, which is part of the soundtrack. Moving on to the imagery; sure, there are some beautiful captures of America’s landscape what with the Grand Canyon and everything but it certainly isn’t a makes-you-wanna-cry-in-awe HD experience. The dialogues are funny and full of wit, the language in general is very original but you would never think to classify Thelma & Louise as a comedy or to rely heavily on dialogue.

I suppose it’s the characters who make all the difference. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis portray unique and original personalities that come across as raw and real which is what makes this movie an evergreen and Thelma and Louise motion picture icons.

So, this one’s definitely going on my list of all-time favorite movies. And I’ll check local stores next week to see whether they have it on DVD somewhere. Thelma & Louise is a keeper.

PS – Brad Pitt sure didn’t look as handsome seventeen years ago, as he does now. (Although, I never really thought he was attractive, anyway.) (1991 was SEVENTEEN YEARS ago??? Excuse me, I’m gonna have to go die.)
